Review: Did Kick-Ass really kick ass?

Posted by Sleepy Sloth On April - 21st - 2010

Well i just saw the movie earlier today and thought I'd post my 2 cents about the movie. This will be a review of some sort. The first one on this blog. I'll try to keep it short. I definitely think Kick-Ass is worth watching. Not a must-watch but definitely worth it. My verdict about it being worthwhile had NOTHING to do with the movie whatsoever and heres why...

As much as it sickens me to post about "IT", it was pretty inevitable, since it was a movie and a money spinning cash-cow for that matter...

Transformers 3: New Autobot revealed!+Casting details+Location details

This is probably the first time we've heard anything about Transformers 3 and the news comes straight from the horse's mouth that is Michael Bay, the director. Since this kind of news doesn't get any more legit than this, I'm just going to copy and paste whatever he said...

Toy Story 3: News & Pictures

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Monday, April 26, 2010 0 comments

Yes, that's right....those oh so lovable band of merry toys will be back this year! I'm sure most of you would have known by now anyway. Buzz Lightyear and Woody will lead the gang back into cinemas on June 18th....wait for it..... IN 3D !! It's been an AWFUL LONG time since the first two movies, Toy Story(1995) and Toy Story 2(1999) came out and I cannot wait to watch the third. I'd definitely love to see the crowd watching this show. I bet all the teenagers and possibly some of the people in their early twenties will be filled with anticipation for this movie :D I know I am! The movie should definitely be great since it's being produced by Pixar, the studio which produced the first two installments as well as other successful animations such as Finding Nemo(2003), Monsters Inc.(2001), Wall-E(2008) and most recently, Up(2009). This time round, Andy is all grown up and goes away to college. He decides to store all his toys except for Woody. Somehow, the stored toys end up getting packed off to some children's day care centre and it's all up to Woody to save the rest of the toys.

There are 14 new characters to be introduced and I wanted to share with you some of the movie posters which include a handful ALL of the new characters. At first when they announced it would be in 3D I was really excited but after watching the recent re-release of the first two movies in 3D, I think we're all better off just watching it in regular 2D.

Anyway, click the Read More button to view all the Toy Story 3 posters :)

WOW. It's been a really good week. A truck load of news this week. Too much in fact. Thought I'd save one or two stories but I check in today and see theres a whole bunch of new stuff. Theres good news, bad news, bizarre news and also some eye candy. I'll go with casting news in this post.

Wow casting news on FOUR movies. The movies being, Protection, The Girl with the Red Riding Hood, Jeff Who Lives at Home and Arthur.

1. Protection:
Story centers on a disgraced former Special Forces soldier who must take on a war of Mexican gangs in an attempt to rescue a judge’s daughter.

The lead role was supposed to have gone to Clive Owen, but they just changed it and gave it to Dwayne Johnson. It's good to see him finally back in an action role. One that doesn't involve his only his CGI head on a scorpion's body. Somehow I don't think it'll do very well. Plot sounds VERY familiar doesn't it? Go watch a Steven Segal movie or something and you'd probably find the same thing.

2. The Girl with the Red Riding Hood:
In a gothic reimagining of "Little Red Riding Hood," a girl tries to uncover the true identity of the wolf that’s been terrorizing her village for the two decades. She must also resolve her feelings for her wealthy fiance and the town’s bad boy.

In this one, the lead character will be played by Amanda Seyfried of Jennifer's Body while Shiloh Fernandez of TV series 'The United States of Tara' is set to play the woodcutter, who happens to be the love interest of Amanda Seyfried's character. Her wealthy fiance will be played by Max Irons, son of actor, Jeremy Irons. Apparently Gary Oldman and Julie Christie, both of whom were in the third installment of the Harry Potter films as Sirius Black and Madam Rosmerta respectively, are in talks to join the cast.

3. Arthur:
A boozy playboy rascal is set to inherit a fortune if he marries an heiress his family thinks will make something out of him. However, he falls in love with a working-class woman and turns to his valet for help when his family makes him choose between money and love.

Now this is the bizarre news I was talking about. Ever thought you'd see Helen Mirren and Russell Brand side by side in the same movie? Neither did I. Apparently Helen Mirren is still in talks and it's not a done deal yet. Meryl Streep has also been linked to this movie though. This is a remake of the 1981 comedy which starred Dudley Moore.

4. Jeff, Who Lives at Hoome:
Two brothers, one of whom is going through a mid-life crisis and believes his wife (Greer) is having an affair. The other is a lovable loser who still lives with his mom (Sarandon). One day, the two brothers set out to spy on the wife, with all sorts of unintended consequences.

I couldn't find an official plot summary but just by looking at the casting, it looks like it'll be a pretty good comedy. The film features Jason Segel from TV's How I Met Your Mother and Ed Helms, from the incredibly funny movie - The Hangover. Now, Susan Sarandon and Judy Greer are set to join the cast. Judy Greer will play the wife of Ed Helm's character while Susan Sarandon will play the two brothers' mother. Judy Greer will be appearing in 'Marmaduke' which is out this June.

Fridays Banter

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Friday, April 23, 2010 0 comments
Good News:
Walt Disney Studios have announced that there will be a sequel to Monsters, Inc. and the tentative release date is November 16th, 2012. It will most likely be in 3D. With this news, you might want to keep your eyes peeled the next time you watch a Pixar movie. They love to introduce new characters for their films by "hiding" them in their other productions.

Bad News:
Surprise, surprise! The Last Airbender is also going to rob people of their money by jumping aboard the 3D train. Even though they just made this decision, the movies release date has not changed. It will still be out on July 2nd. One more reason not to go watch this movie.

The "I-don't-know-where-this-goes" news:
Remember the odd green poster I shared not too long ago? It was the Green Hornet. Well the movie has been pushed back from December 22nd to January 14th. Not only that, but the movie will be converted to 3D. I really don't know what to say about this one. Pushing the release was probably a good idea since 'Tron: Legacy' will probably in all likelihood come out tops in December. Besides, apparently Sony execs didn't even like their own poster(the one I posted the link to). I highly doubt converting it to 3D will be a good idea. Maybe the 3D hype will die out by then. There has also been doubts over the casting of Seth Rogen in the main role as the movie is supposed to be more action based. Read More......

Trailer Thursday

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Friday, April 23, 2010 0 comments
I have two trailers to share today. One trailer is a comedy which came out a few days ago and looks pretty interesting. The other is pretty old but it's bound to be one of the 'big' releases. I also have two three really cool clips I want to share as well :)

Trailer #1 - Grown Ups
Cast: Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Salma Hayek, David Spade
Release: June 25th

Interesting because it has a unique storyline but I'm still on the fence for this one. I never liked any of Chris Rock's movies unfortunately/fortunately. Doesn't look like it'll be very funny either. Not sure if you want to watch it? Then try watching Pretty Ugly People(2008), it has a slightly similar storyline. If you like that then chances are you'll probably like Grown Ups.

Trailer #2 - Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina, Steve Toussaint
Release: May 28th

Again, I'm on the fence with this one also. Mostly because in a way its similar to Clash of the Titans - and we all know how that turned out. Jake Gyllenhaal is a better actor than Sam Worthington anyway so thats a plus. Ben Kingsley. Can't remember the last movies he was in apart from Shutter Island and I haven't seen that yet so I don't know how he was in it but I do know that Alfred Molina was really good in An Education. Gemma Arterton. Mmm...she was in Clash of the Titans as Io. Well do I really need to go on about that one? Well she's just in this one as eye candy *hopefully*. Well with all the hype surrounding this movie I guess most of us will be going to watch it anyway. Right?

Now onto the clips I wanted to share :D

Clip #1 - 'Easy A'(Meet Olive Penderghast teaser trailer)

There is no official trailer for this movie as of yet and this is the first clip to be released. No offense to anyone, but this looks like a chick flick BUT don't worry guys. Did you watch Zombieland? Did you have a crush on the 'ridiculously cute girl' in the movie for the next two days? Well her name is Emma Stone and she plays the main character in this movie. Apart from being really cute, she's also pretty funny (a la Zombieland and in the clip below) so theres one reason why all guys should PROBABLY watch this one.

Clip #2 - Robin Hood ('Gate Assault' teaser trailer)

Now this clip I wanted to share because it's being directed by Ridley Scott and stars Russell Crowe. Judging from the trailer,it looks very similar to Gladiator and that was an amazing movie. One of my all time favourites.

Clip #3 - Mike Relm Iron Man 2 Remix

This clip I just had to post. I'm sure all of you are familiar with song remixes, but a movie trailer remix? This is the first time I've come across one. It's really good though I think it's probably not suitable for 'epileptic prone' people ;p

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones on board for MIB 3D

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Thursday, April 22, 2010 0 comments
According to Showbiz 411, both Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will be back as agent K and agent J for "Men In Black 3" so I guess that kills the earlier rumours that suggested they wouldn't be returning. As if that weren't enough, it was also announced that the third installment will be in 3D! Now this will probably one of the few movies which will be good to watch in 3D, unlike all the recent random movies jumping on the 3D train... *cough*Clash of *cough* the Titans *ahem*. Did Kick-Ass really kick ass?

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Wednesday, April 21, 2010 0 comments
Well i just saw the movie earlier today and thought I'd post my 2 cents about the movie. This will be a review of some sort. The first one on this blog. I'll try to keep it short. I definitely think Kick-Ass is worth watching. Not a must-watch but definitely worth it. My verdict about it being worthwhile had NOTHING to do with the movie whatsoever and heres why...

First of all, I live in a pretty conservative country so finding out that Kick-Ass was going to be showing here without being renamed to some crappy title was pretty damn miraculous. I go to the cinema, I queue up to buy my ticket and i go up to the counter. What do I say? "Kick ass!". Thats pretty priceless. It's not that often you get to go out in public and say that to some strangers face. Especially here in Malaysia. That is reason number 1 why you should go and watch Kick-Ass.

Okay, now I'm sitting in front of the screen and the movie starts playing. After the first couple of minutes I am feel EXTREMELY relieved because it actually seems like its going to be a pretty decent movie unlike the last one I watched - the train wreck that was Clash of the Titans. It started off with some pretty crude humour. You know, the type where you laugh at first then you go "Eeeeewwww....". Then we get to see the lead character, Dave Lizewski and how he becomes Kick-Ass.

About midway through the movie, I started to feel as if this movie was 'over the top' and it seemed to be heading in a downward spiral when they threw in the "loser/nerd/geek gets the girl" cliche but then it picks itself up in the last three-quarters of the story. How does it manage to do so you ask? Well honestly, the true star of the show was Chloë Grace Moretz as Mindy Macready. She plays the knife-wielding, gun-toting, ultra violent 11-year old masked vigilante, Hit-Girl. Yep, Hit-Girl has received A LOT of criticism all over the globe for being such a violent and vulgar character. Especially since she's supposed to be only 11-years old. Along side her father, Damon Macready a.k.a. Big Daddy they form a pretty lethal partnership. The movie only becomes interesting when you see these two in action. Nicolas Cage plays Big Daddy, who happens to look alot like Bat Man. At the peak of the movie in the warehouse scene where Big Daddy is kidnapped along with Kick-Ass, Nicolas Cage actually manages to remind us all that he still is a pretty solid actor. From then on, its all about Hit-Girl and it is pretty awesome. Don't know how awesome? Well let me try to give you a rough picture. If you have watched the movie Wanted, then imagine Angelina Jolie's action scenes in that movie and multiply it by about 5 or 10 times. Yeah, thats how violent and awesome Hit-Girl is.

All in all, it is a pretty good movie. Entertaining if your an action buff. Might not be your cup of tea if you don't like excessive violence, swearing and superhero movies. Like I mentioned earlier it does get a little drab when your midway through the movie but hang in there, all the "good parts" are in the last three-quarters of the movie. The acting is good, it has a good concept, awesome action scenes and enough humour. It even had the romance although that was pretty cliche. Did Kick-Ass really kick ass? No. Not really but Hit-Girl most definitely did! If I had to rate this movie I think I'd give it a 7/10. I was originally leaning towards a 5 but the ending was really good.

Iron Man 2 Stills!

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Wednesday, April 21, 2010 0 comments
With less than 10 days to go till it finally shows(yes it actually premiers on April 30th if you DON'T live in North America), I decided to post more pictures. Also because I really wanted to try this nifty little program I found that lets me create an image gallery easily and also to let everybody(people who don't live in the US) know it premiers on the 30th of April and not May 7th. These pictures are stills from the actual movie.

Just click on the album like picture below, and a new window with all the images should pop up. By the way, these aren't all the pictures. There were more, but I just picked some. This whole post is basically to test out this new album making program.

Bond 23 thrown into doubt

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Wednesday, April 21, 2010 0 comments
Well its been "delayed indefinitely". Why? Because MGM studios are having major financial issues. Heres the statement:
"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on 'Bond 23' indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of 'Bond 23,'" stated Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli jointly."

So basically what this means is either it'll be back on when the studio gets taken over or this might be the end of Bond. Not too long ago, The Hobbit was also thrown into doubt but director Peter Jackson has come out and said they will begin shooting somewhere around late September. Read More......

Mish Mash Thursday: Casting news!

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Friday, April 16, 2010 0 comments
Mmmm no stories which could make a single post. Just a mish mash but a really interesting mish mash we have here. Since it's part of my freakish nature to organise and group stuff, I think I'm going to number this concoction so it won't be so...."mish mash-y" Oooh whaddaya' know they are grouped after all! Their all casting news. With some of them being pretty big movies.Butter, Captain America and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

1. Butter
I'll start off with the lesser known movie, Butter. Yes thats right, its simply titled butter. Your probably thinking the same thing I did initially. "Hah I bet theres nothing to do with Butter. Crazy movie producers!" Well that was a pleasant surprise. The movie is actually about Butter sculpting. Onto my next thought. "How could a movie about butter sculpting possibly be good?" Well by the looks of the cast, it's starting to look pretty good already. Well its not a star studded line up of Oscar winners but it is pretty decent. The 2011 film is set to star Jennifer Garner, Hugh Jackman, Alicia Silverstone, Ashley Greene, and Olivia Wilde. Okay so what is the actual deal with a movie about butter? Well its supposed to be a symbolic representation of the 2008 American Democratic Election. Jennifer Garner will be the leading lady as well as producing while Ashley Greene plays a butter carving contestant, Alicia Silverstone will play the adoptive mother of one of the characters and Olivia Wilde will be playing a.....stripper! Yes! I'm completely sold on that last bit of news alone. So when can I watch this thing?

2.Captain America
The big news? The female lead role for the movie has been cast. It goes to the British actress Hayley Atwell(pictured). She will be playing Peggy Carter, Captain America's British love interest. Hayley Atwell has appeared in the movies, "The Duchess" and "Brideshead Revisited". Some other non-related Captain America news. Yesterday I posted about the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer being tipped to direct "The Avengers" movie. Today news has popped up saying he will also be rewriting the Captain America script. Does this mean that he really will be doing the Avengers?

3. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Not really 'big' news I guess but hey, any news on this movie should be pretty big right? Even if it means little known French actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey has been cast as the mermaid Syrena. Not much info on the character apart from the fact that Johnny Depp's character, Captain Jack Sparrow come across her and its supposed to be a "key role". The actress of French and American decent is said to have been personally chosen by director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Astrid Bergès-Frisbey:

The Other Guys and Splice movie trailers.

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Thursday, April 15, 2010 0 comments

Double trailer post. Now at first glance, I shouldn't be posting the two trailers together. Why? Because ones an action comedy which features Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson, and Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. The other movie is a sci-fi horror which features Adrien Brody. Well I decided to post the two trailers together because honestly, I started laughing when i saw the "horror" trailer. It just looks so bad its hilarious.

The Other Guys is out somewhere in August while Splice comes out June 4th.

The Other Guys: The last couple of Will Ferrell movies were abit boring to me. Never really liked them. Especially Step Brothers. This movie though looks really good. Even the trailer alone is completely hilarious.

Splice: Hahahaha what is that ugly plastic-shemale looking alien creature? Its as if the creators came up with this movie and then halfway realised the storyline is the usual "experiment gone wrong" and decided to put a dress on the thing.

Creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to direct Avengers movie?

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Thursday, April 15, 2010 0 comments

Various sites have reported that Joss Whedon, the creator of TV shows Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly is allegedly in negotiations to direct the multi superhero movie. If he does, he'll gain a cast which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Chris Evans as Captain America...just to name a few. There are also rumours about the release date of the movie being on "Star Wars Day" in 2012 which is May 4th. Also, there are supposed to be some clips from the upcoming Thor and Captain America movies at the end of the credits in the Iron Man 2 movie which will be out next month. Read More......

The Weekend Roundup

Posted by The Sleepy Sloth On Monday, April 05, 2010 0 comments

A couple of nice trailers and some pretty decent rumours. 3 trailers to be exact. Resident Evil: Afterlife, Salt, and The A-Team. Rumours about a Red Sonja movie.

Click on "read more"

I'll start with the rumour. Word is that their trying to revive plans for a Red Sonja movie. Red Sonja is a character from Conan the barbarian. Earlier plans were that Rose McGowan who used to be on the TV series "Charmed" would play the character but she recently got a different part in the remake of the Conan movie. Various sites are saying that the part is now being offered to Megan Fox. Oh right before i forget, Red Sonja also wears a bikini chain mail.

Resident Evil: Afterlife is in 3D. Definitely will be watching this. What about you? Not sure? Ali Larter and Mila Jovovich. 3D. Lots of guns and swords.

Salt. If you liked Wanted, your proabably going to like this. It's just not as "aggresive".

The A-Team. Based on the popular TV show. It has a pretty interesting cast with Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper and rapper Common. I have to admit, it actually looks pretty good. I'm just disappointed they didn't get the original Mr. T in it.
